As soon as I looked at this and read that you were making it

My instant first thought was your first problem and that was how do you turn it inside out I would use the rod of some sort but even then for longer curly things I did it's kind of difficult

One+ for an octopus is that it's got eight legs after a couple you probably get the hang of it and if the first two weren't very good hide them in the back

I do have a turning tool. I think it's too short for these legs though. This is something I'm going to have to work on because I'm no good at it and it comes up all the time. You have great ideas!! Thank you.

So Paula, I see you are a history buff. Would you like to hear a theory?

Consider that the arrival of Spaniards here in 1492 was the birth of the American civilization analogous to the Chinese or Egyptian. The revolution in 1776 began the first American dynasty in which white men ruled. Until now. I think we are witnessing the death throes of the first American dynasty. The Trump administration will be so poorly, cruelly managed, and so ineffectually opposed by Democrat men, that a third party will arise in opposition to the old two party system and both male-dominant parties. The new party will aim to establish female rule as is happening in the European Union. (It’s my belief that male nature is competitive, greedy, and violent, while women are cooperative, generous, and compassionate. Nations run by men are run by male nature which is inclined toward conflict. A country run by women will be generous and compassionate. I think after four more years of GOP male rule, we will elect a woman president and a woman-dominant legislature. (I think a woman-controlled US would have done much more to protect the Palestinians.) This new woman-dominated administration will be the first of the Second American Dynasty. I believe woman rule will spread all over the world. It is the birth of the second age of human civilization, an age of cooperation, generosity, and compassion among nations. What do you think?

Question...what would happen if the legs were made without the coil, and instead make them straight, take some stiff wire wrapped in yarn or other material to keep it from being hazardous, and use a single wire per arm to make them pose-able? Or the wire "skeleton" could all be wired together to form a kind of wire hub in the octopus body to make it a little easier to pose, since it would otherwise be kind of floppy with just the arms having the stiff element.

This could be done. Whether it would relieve the strain on the joins I don't know. I have tried using heavy wire in my projects. I haven't been thrilled with the results. But practice makes perfect. It is a recognized technique for strengthening limbs.

You've known me long enough to know I'd suggest small rare Earth magnets to attach the arms to the body. Then you could make multiple arms to mix and match with different themes to reflect the seasons, genres like steampunk with little tools and gears, whatever seems nifty. Cephalopods are awesome!

Of course! I'll ask Alan about this. Kind of a crazy way to make a toy, but if it works who cares? Thank you.

Can you sew the legs to a round piece of fabric so they're securely attached, and then sew the round piece to Diane's head? Attaching the round piece with a looping slipstitch will create a somewhat thicker ring, but the legs will be secure. It's cute! Good choice of colors.

I can certainly try. I wonder if I need an extra thick piece--either double thickness or just something kind of stiff.
